ISO and UNDP Unveil First Global Standard for SDG Management
ISO/UNDP 53001 establishes requirements for management systems aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals, debuting at the ISO Annual Meeting in Paris.
The International Organization for Standardization and the United Nations Development Programme jointly launched ISO/UNDP 53001 on Monday in Paris, marking the debut of the world's first International Standard designed specifically to advance action on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The announcement came on the opening day of the ISO Annual Meeting.
The standard, formally titled "Management systems for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Requirements," provides organizations with a structured framework for integrating SDG commitments into their core operations and governance processes. Its release represents a significant step toward creating measurable, verifiable accountability around global sustainability targets.

By establishing a common international benchmark, ISO/UNDP 53001 is intended to help governments, businesses, and civil society organizations align their internal management systems with the 17 SDGs adopted by UN member states. The collaboration between ISO, the Geneva-based body responsible for international standards, and UNDP, the UN's global development network, signals a broadening institutional push to make SDG progress auditable and comparable across sectors and borders. Launching the standard at the ISO Annual Meeting amplified its visibility among national standards bodies and industry stakeholders gathered for the event.
